Geriatric Massage

Geriatric massage focuses on the needs of the elderly client.  It is often performed at home or in an institutional setting if the client is too infirm to come to the office.   Geriatric massage must be done carefully and with awareness of the special requirements of the aging body/mind.  “Less is more,” is a good idea with this type of massage.  Not only is the tissue more fragile, but circulation and other factors make geriatric massage a complex format that only the trained therapist should attempt.  Things that do not bother a younger client could be harmful to an older person.  The therapist should use a complete medical history and skilled observation before working with the geriatric client.  Sometimes a doctor’s permission and collaboration is best.
